Therapy for Children

Therapy for children ages 9 and up.

We offer individual therapy for children ages 9 and up. A few of our counselors offer therapy for children between the ages of 5 and 9. Due to the limitations of scheduling and accommodating after-school hours, availability for child therapy is very limited and wait times are long. If your child’s treatment needs are urgent, we highly recommend reaching out to other practices in order to secure spots on multiple waitlists. If you are open to dismissing your child from school for scheduled appointments, this may increase appointment availability options. Please note that in your appointment request.

Typically, sessions are 45 minutes long, however, depending on the needs of the child, sessions may be scheduled at 30 or 60 minutes.

Therapy for children can be beneficial when children are exhibiting emotional, social, or behavioral issues that appear to be out of the range of normal development and/or are causing distress to the child and impacting their ability to engage successfully at home, school, or in public. Counselors utilize various methods and techniques to cultivate a warm, friendly, and nonjudgemental environment where the child can explore, increase awareness of emotional states, social cues/skills, and develop healthy problem solving strategies.

Parent and family engagement is highly recommend, as children often internalize issues that are already present in the family system. Please connect with your counselor to discuss what that engagement might look like. Often counselors will meet with a parent at the end of sessions for 5 to 10 minutes, or schedule a separate parent consult session to discuss things at length. Counselors will take into consideration the age of the child, presenting problems, family dynamics, and privacy preferences of the child in order to determine the best strategy and plan for family involvement.
